Sports Commentator, Writer, Editor

Steve Kallas is a NYC sports commentator and can expand that to youth sports and sports and the law.  He writes and comments frequently both on the air and through his decades of sports writing.

An excellent athlete himself, Steve played baseball, basketball and was even on the bowling team at the legendary Power Memorial Academy. He then played Division One baseball at NYU (hitting .350 in his varsity career), as well as basketball and bowling (bowling for a national championship in his junior year).

Today, Steve is still a competitive bowler, maintains his harness racing license to train and drive harness horses and still plays basketball with his son and others in pickup games in Lower Manhattan.

Sports is in Steve’s DNA, as his father, John, was a minor league catcher for the Yankees right before joining the Army in World War II. He also coached Steve and many of his friends from Little League through freshman year of high school.

In 2017, Steve Kallas was inducted into the Power Memorial Academy Hall of Fame, joining such luminaries as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Steve’s high school coach, Brendan Malone.

Steve Kallas now serves on the Power Memorial Academy Alumni Association’s Board of Directors, helping, among other things, to raise money to provide scholarships to inner city youth at All Hallows High School, the only remaining Christian Brothers high school in the five boroughs.

GUESTS

Johnnie Kallas (named after his grandfather, John), carries on a proud tradition of sports fandom and knowledge. He is especially expert in all things Tom Brady and New England Patriots. Like his father and grandfather, Johnnie can quote statistics and talk about specific plays and specific games from many years ago.

Joe Staszak, a long time friend and colleague of Steve Kallas, is also a seasoned sports commentator having appeared for many years on both Fox 29 TV in Philadelphia, as well as ESPN’s local radio station in Philadelphia, 97.5 the Fanatic. Joe and Steve have done a weekly podcast, “Kallas Remarks,” for over five years.  Every Friday, the latest edition can be found at Westchetercountypost.com, as well as the Facebook group, “Speaking of Sports” with Steve Kallas and Joe Staszak’s Facebook page.

Other guest commentators are featured for comments on their areas of expertise, including Anthony Sorbellini, MA, on Westchester County collegiate and youth sports and Janelle Allbritton, MPH, on public health issues and sports (focused on CTE, as well as CoViD-19).
